課程概述

In this course, we examine how globalization affects various types of social determinants of health and health inequalities, which in turn influence individuals’ health and population health. The course emphasizes the social and policy aspects of health issues. We begin with an introduction to the framework of social determinants of health, typology of policy-level interventions to tackle health inequalities, and methodological issues. Following that, selected topics will be addressed from a social determinant of health perspective. We will review the state-of-the-art knowledge and discuss potential policy interventions to promote health equity both on the domestic and international levels. 

課程目標
Upon completion of the course, students should acquire the following competencies:
1. Understand the key concepts of social determinants of health;
2. Comprehend the consequences of globalization on social determinants of health and health inequalities;
3. Propose and analyze the different types of health policies to tackle health inequalities. 
課程要求
The course is offered in English. A basic understanding of public health and health policy is helpful but not a prerequisite. Students are expected to read assigned readings prior to the lecture and submit assignments on a weekly basis. Students are also expected to participate in class discussions and work on a final project which can be done individually or in pairs.

Weekly assignments

Students are required to read assigned readings before the class; questions will be provided and students are expected to write homework for at least 6 sessions. Assignments should be submitted prior to the session.

Participation

Students are expected to attend class and participate in class discussions.  
3. 
Final report and oral presentation 
20% 
Students should write up a short report and present it to the class. The final report can be done individually or in groups of up to three students. • 11/10/2023 (Friday): Submit the title and outline of the report, along with the names of group members. • 12/22/2023 (Friday): Submit the final written paper (suggested length is 3000-5000 words, excluding references)
